Named after a song by one of my favorite bands, Concrete Blonde, this portrait pays tribute to lead singer Johnette Napolitano’s use of Catrina imagery and my own long-standing fascination with it. The original photo used for this artwork is of myself, making the piece both personal and symbolic. The background was created through wet and Nuno felting with merino wool, bamboo, silk, viscose, and wool nepps. Once dry, I needle felted the facial details and added dimensional embellishments—art yarns, mohair locks, beads, crystals, and hand-formed 3D rosettes. The moon pendant at her throat nods to the song’s title, “Bajo La Luna Mexicana,” weaving music, identity, and texture into one luminous vision.
